We do need a public house in Moulsecoomb; a local one that doesn’t attract more students to the area.

We have students next door to nearly every house in the area, which devalues residents’ properties. Loud music, no parking spaces and partying at unsociable hours are issues.

Turning Bevendean Hotel into student accommodation is unacceptable. When the hotel was open, it was used by all ages, but mainly local middle aged and elderly people.

It was a social place to meet and chat with locals and friends. Where to go now?

As for the comment by Tony Morris (The Argus, October 2), of the Premier Shop close to the Bevendean Hotel, saying he is in favour of students living in this area, and that it would create more working shifts for mums with the shop staying open for longer hours: Well, didn’t the Bevendean do just that? Many locals lost their jobs when the pub closed.

We want our local pub back, not student quarters or a new block of flats.

There was community spirit there. Why should we travel to town where we don’t know anyone? We want a local on our doorstep for locals to use.
