Your splendid interview with Sir Norman Wisdom’s children (The Argus, October 12) reminds me of the occasion I met the great man while working on a cruise ship five years ago.

After thanking Sir Norman for the entertainment he had given me during my boyhood I gave him a synopsis of my favourite film of his.

He immediately replied “Square Peg”. At the end of the cruise Sir Norman took to the stage and sang four songs. He then signed autographs for two-and-a-half-hours.

The comic in him was still there as he kept calling the pianist email instead of Emil!
