Opposition councillors have tried to block plans to close a nursery.

On Monday, Vanessa Brown, Brighton and Hove City Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, agreed to the public being consulted on plans to close Bright Start Nursery in North Road, Brighton.

However, the decision has been called-in for scrutiny by councillor Amy Kennedy, the deputy convenor of the Green group on the local authority.

Coun Kennedy said a report prepared for Coun Brownhad not considered all possible options for the nursery.

She also argued that the council had to ensure there was sufficient nursery provision in the city.

The council’s scrutiny committee now has seven days to meet and decide whether the correct procedures were followed.

If members decide they were, the consultation will go ahead. If not, the issue will be sent back to Coun Brown to look at again.

Green councillor Rachel Fryer said: “The report did not contain any worked up alternative options or what the social or financial implications for closure would be so we felt it was essential to consider these first.”
