Almost 1,300 schoolchildren skipped class to take part in a mass demonstration against education cuts.

Six people - five of them teenagers - were arrested following Wednesday's protest which saw youngsters clash with police outside council buildings in Brighton.

Sussex Police said it expected more arrests would be made in the coming days as officers continue to investigate reports of theft and public order offences from the protest.

About 50 students were still occupying the University of Brighton's Pavilion Parade building last night and said they intended to stay there as long as possible.

Up to 3,000 people, some as young as 11 and still dressed in school uniform, took part in the demonstration against Government proposals to cut the teaching budget and raise the cap on university tuition fees to £9,000 a year.
