Thrill-seekers could soon enjoy views of Sussex from 400ft up in the air.

Plans have been revealed to install a giant, static hot air balloon in Eastbourne.

The hot air balloon, similar to the Bournemouth Eye, would be tethered to the ground and look out over the town and beyond.

Although details have not been confirmed, Bournemouth’s balloon reaches 390ft, the maximum allowed by the Civil Aviation Authority.

During clear weather it is possible to see 20 miles.

The Eastbourne Eye, as it has been dubbed, would be located in the town’s Princes Park, which is undergoing refurbishment between now and 2012.

The Bournemouth Eye has proved incredibly popular.

It is a spherical balloon with an enclosed gondola carrying up to 30 people. It is attached to a steel cable.

Eastbourne District Council announced it hoped to bring the scheme to Sussex, although there is currently no timeframe.

In a statement addressing its plans for the park, the council explained that £290,000 was being invested over the next two years.

The statement said: “Further improvements could see the introduction of a tethered hot air balloon.”

The Bournemouth Eye only operates from Easter until autumn and Eastbourne’s equivalent would also only be open in the summer.

Prices for the Eastbourne balloon have not yet been confirmed.

However, it costs adults £12.50 and children £7.50 to go up in Bournemouth’s balloon.

Improvements will also be made to other aspects of Princes Park including the old paddling pool which looks set to be removed and replaced.

John Henderson, from the Friends of Princes Park, said: “We’ve all heard about the hot air balloon and believe it is being set up by the council and a private firm.

“It is supposed to be just like the one in Bournemouth. I think it is a great idea.”

Chairwoman of the Friends of Princes Park, Jacky Mullender, said: “The new schemes planned for next year are really exciting.

“We are looking forward to seeing the proposals from the Princes Park Development Plan, which will further enhance the park and increase visitors.”
