The charmed life of a pop star is about as far removed from the misery of living in student digs as you could get.

But Brighton singing sensation Natasha Khan – also known as Bat for Lashes – has relived the damp and cold days she spent in her student house in the city as part of a new campaign aimed at keeping vulnerable tenants warm.

Ms Khan, has lent her backing to Friends of the Earth’s WarmHomes campaign, which aims to put pressure on the Government to stop draughty houses making people ill.

The 31-year-old said the house she used to live in while studying music and visual arts at the University of Brighton, was infested with slugs and mould.

Speaking of her time in a house in Park Crescent Road, near The Level, she said: “We suffered the worst mould you could imagine in my student house.

“Over our two-year let it got to the point where you’d have to dodge at least 20 slugs living off the moisture in the carpet then inhale black mould spores if the steam from the shower got too much.

“The cold, draughts and dampness were pretty extreme."
