Complaints against police have risen in the aftermath of heated clashes between protestors and officers.

At least nine people have complained to Sussex Police about demonstrations in Brighton and Hove in the final weeks of 2010.

Across the whole force the number of people complaining rose by 9% between October and December, from 608 the previous year to 663.

The total number of allegations rose by 21%, including claims against police officers and support staff of oppressive behaviour, malpractice, failures of duty and incivility.

Despite the high numbers, only 38 - 5% of the total - were substantiated.

“Local resolution” was used in 36% of cases, meaning police explained themselves or apologised without formal action being taken. More than 50% were either withdrawn or unsubstantiated.

Sussex Police confirmed it has received nine complaints about demonstrations against tuition fees on November 30 and against claims of tax avoidance by businesses on December 4.
