A conference of traders, residents and supermarket officials is being planned over fears business giants are killing off independent firms.
Some traders and residents believe Brighton and Hove is becoming “bland” because of the opening of dozens of multinational stores in the city in recent years.
To combat the issue, Brighton and Hove City Council leader Mary Mears has suggested a mass forum of traders, residents and supermarket bosses to “jointly identify” the problems.
Coun Mears said she hoped it would “help rebalance the business mix of the city”.
Local authorities currently have limited powers against multinationals moving into prime retail units.
Hove MP Mike Weatherley has suggested a change to planning law to ensure supermarket chains are not allowed to adversely alter the current high street status quo.
