Residents living on Hollingbury's Carden Avenue are fuming over inconsiderate dog walkers letting dogs foul their street and gardens.
Despite there being a minimum of five bins in sight of the bank of shops, nearby homeowners have been finding dog mess in their front gardens, paths, and even on top of their wheelie bins.
Mrs Von Brevern, who lives doors up from the bank of shops on the street, says: “Everyone comes to the shops walking their dogs, and they don’t bring bags to clean up after them. It’s a problem for all the residents.”
Hygiene worries have been raised by the fact that Carden Primary School is also just next door to the shops.
Brighton and Hove City Council said on the issue: “Within the last month, the level of complaints in the borough about dog fouling have increased substantially.”
The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act of 1996 states that people who do not clean up after any dog in their charge can be prosecuted and fined up to £1,000.
However, the council added: “Unfortunately, this is very difficult to enforce, and we cannot prosecute anyone without CCTV or eyewitness evidence and the address of the offender.”
The most the council can do is to increase the number of warning signs or to clean up the fouling on the street, which people can request by ringing the Environmental Health line on (01273) 292929, or going to the Environmental Health section of the Brighton and Hove Council Website.
