As residents of Old Town, Eastbourne, we have noticed a serious increase in the amount of traffic and its speed around the residential streets in our area.
We understand a pedestrian hit by a car travelling at 40mph has an 85 per cent chance of being killed, while at 20mph the risk falls to five per cent.
Apparently, road crashes account for nearly half of all accidental injury fatalities in children and it has been shown when traffic is slowed to 20mph, there is a 70 per cent drop in accidents involving child pedestrians.
Given the above, we should surely be trying to get speed limits reduced in our residential areas.
Do you want to do something about fast car speeds in Old Town and make roads safer for all users?
If you can help with the campaign (letter-writing, delivering leaflets, putting up signs in your garden etc) to get the speed limits reduced, contact 20's Plenty For Old Town at the email address below.
