Well done, Brighton and Hove City Council's Gill Mitchell, chair of the environmental committee, and Brian Oxley, leader of Conservatives, for drawing the strategic importance of the Brighton-to-Watford Junction mainline express service to the attention of the Ministry for Transport.
It provides a direct link between the Southern and Midland national rail networks, avoiding the congested London terminus stations.
Rather than being axed, this vital link should be better promoted.
Commuters to west London and Gatwick passengers to and from north of London should be aware they can bypass central London using this route. And the often-empty Gatwick-Victoria Express trains should be redeployed to this route to supply direct services between Brighton and the North of England, avoiding London.
