Top of people's wish list for Brighton Marina's western end are better access, public spaces and good views.

Hundreds of residents filled in a survey following an exhibition last month on plans to transform the western part of the marina into an international location.

The top three priorities were for easier access and movement for pedestrians and cyclists; improved public spaces; and improved views of the marina, from outside and from within.

Most respondents said they wanted more pedestrian links, safer and more attractive footpaths, and better signage and maps.

They were particularly in favour of a cliff-top bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

Respondents to the survey, organised by XLeisure and Parkridge Estates, which run the marina, were also positive about the idea of green spaces, including a park at the foot of the cliff and children's play areas.

Others raised a desire for a board-walk, water features and community facilities such as a post office, doctors' or dentists' surgery and cafes.

There was also strong support for a welldesigned shopping area to help attract people to the less successful commercial areas of the marina.

Asda and McDonald's are expected to be knocked down and incorporated into new developments which include residential, commercial and retail space. The existing Asda would remain open until the new store was ready. Other parts of the western sector up for regeneration include the Asda car park and the roundabout near the base of the ramp access.

Respondents to the survey were largely in favour of these plans. They said the areas most in need of improvement included the Asda store and car park, the multi-storey car park, the entrance area of the marina, the walkways near the cinema and the McDonald's area.

Residents will also be pleased by the recent reopening of the undercliff walk from Black Rock to Saltdean. It had been closed for safety reasons after severe cliff falls on a section behind Asda five years ago.

The facelift to the western sector is a separate project to Brunswick Developments' £235 million skyscraper development but its designers hope both projects, and the one at Black Rock, will complement each other.

The project is being managed by Explore Living, the development arm of international group Laing O'Rourke.

Project leader Jim Dennis said: "We have had a fantastically positive response to our proposals for improved public space, especially making the most of the stunning cliffs."

A new exhibition including initial designs will be held at the Brighton Marina Regeneration Project's information centre in the Village Square at the marina. It will be open from 6.30pm to 9pm on September 1 and from 10am to 4pm on September 2 and September 4 to 8.
