1 - From Berwick Station start the walk southwards along the road, passing the Berwick Inn on your left. After a few yards, turn right along a signed bridleway which squeezes to the right of a storage shed and continues as a narrow path through scrub.

Emerging into the open, head slightly left across a field to a gate and continue between fence and hedge with a fine view southwards to the ridge of the Downs east from Firle Beacon. Just past the buildings of Stonery Farm on your right, turn left to follow the access drive from the farm out to a road.

2 - Your next path starts almost opposite, down four steps, half-left across a field corner, through a belt of trees and on in the same direction across the next field where a path should be trodden out.

On the other side of the field, go through a gap about 40 yards to the right of the field corner, maintain direction across the corner of a field then through another gap and on, once again without change of direction, across two more fields with a culvert in a dip between them.

Cross a stile, go through a gap between two wooden power poles and then bear right along a right field edge with the spire of Berwick Church in direct line ahead.

In the field corner, cross a footbridge and go forward across a field to join the A27.

3 - Turn left and, after a few yards, go right along Berwick village street, passing the Cricketer’s Inn (pictured above) on your right. At a Y-junction, fork right unless you’d like to visit the 13th-century church, notable for some modern murals painted by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell, members of the Bloomsbury Group, who lived at nearby Charleston Farm. Where the drive divides again, go ahead, ignoring a left fork.

Where the concrete farm drive bends left into a farmyard, go ahead along a wide clear path, soon unfenced across an arable field. On the other side of the field, ignoring a stile ahead, turn left along the field edge.

After about 100 yards, turn right through a gap in this hedge to follow the right edge of the next field. In the field corner turn right through a gap and, after five yards, go left over a stile and forward beside the flint wall surrounding Alciston churchyard.

In the field corner, pass through a squeeze stile and turn right along the church access path to join a lane.

4 - Turn right to follow the lane through Alciston village, passing the Rose Cottage pub on your left. Just past a house called Greywether’s on your left, turn left through a small car parking area to a gate then forward along a field edge.

In the field corner, go through two swing gates in quick succession and, ignoring a third swing gate on your left, go ahead beside a left-hand fence, soon veering slightly right across the field and dropping down to a gate in the far right corner. Climb along a right field edge to join a lane and turn left.

5 - After 40 yards, turn right along a concrete drive which eventually becomes a grass track. Follow a left field edge to a gate and on, in the same direction, to another gate. Through this gate, turn right along the field edge and after about 100 yards, go right over a stile and through a badly overgrown hedge to a second stile.

Now head half-left across a field to a third stile, on in the same direction across a field corner to another stile and across the next field to join the A27.

6 - Your next path starts from the other side of the road about 60 yards to the right, overgrown for the first few yards to a stile, then along a left field edge. Over another stile in the corner, go half-right.

Use two stiles to cross a drive, and then continue across a field to pass over two more stiles in a hedgerow.

Head half-left across the field beyond, passing immediately to the right of a tree-shrouded pond.

A short drive takes you out between houses to join a road. Turn left.

Just past a level crossing warning notice, turn right through a gap, along a right field and through a gap in the corner, then keeping close to a right field edge as it turns right and left.

In the next field corner, ignoring the stile ahead, turn left, still along the right field edge.

In the next field corner, cross an overgrown stile and follow the right edge of the next field to reach a railway crossing.

Carry on northwards along the right edge of the first field and the left edge of a second field.

Approaching the top of a low rise, when opposite a stile on your left, turn squarely right across the field to a gate and continue along a right field edge to a stile in the corner.

Go forward, soon joining and following the drive from Ludlay Farm.

Just past an open-sided barn on your right, turn right through a swing gate, walk along the right edge of a meadow to another gate and a path through a thicket and behind houses to join a road next to Berwick Station where the walk ends.
