The Priory, when discovered, provided an awesome setting for this secret gig by guitar pop band The Feeling.

A former nunnery-turned-carvery and business centre, it was an unlikely venue with its stained-glass windows and steepled roof.

Although only 200 Southern FM competition winners were lucky enough to get tickets, the bass soon rang out as if the band were playing to thousands, with the sound echoing through The Priory's rafters.

They may not be the trendiest proposition on the music scene, but this Sussex five-piece, three of whom are from Horsham, have seen their star ascend rapidly on the back of good old-fashioned radio play for their good old-fashioned songs.

Hard graft has helped too, of course, and when the bassist suffered technical difficulties on Tuesday night, the band recalled their days playing wedding parties and garages.

With a rainbow-coloured pop sound close to similarly nice chaps and label mates Keane, The Feeling rocked through songs like Rose, which they attributed to the effects of recording in a shed after visiting their local Tesco's and buying the only drink on special offer.

The room, which was no bigger than a lounge, heated up to the sound of gentle anthems such as Join With Us.

Then came a break for questions and an informal interview session with the audience.

Questions about favourite football teams and Big Brother winner Pete Bennett suggested at least some of the crowd were more interested in the band's new-found celebrity than their music.

Luckily, the band finally escaped from kisses and phone number requests, launching into a second half with the fantastic debut single Sewn.

The rest of the gig was raw and stylish, with each band member giving enough passion to fill Wembley stadium.
