Bert Davenport seems to have shot himself in the foot using the word "promenade" (Letters, August 16) while talking about Worthing's cycle lane.

The dictionary tells us this word means "a public walk especially at the seaside"; "a leisurely walk" - no mention of cycling.

Why should walkers have to constantly look down to see if they are walking on the right section of pavement ("a hard surfaced path for pedestrians") instead of enjoying the view?

Why should children be restricted from running free?

Bikes belong on the road. Cycle lanes belong on the road.
