Talking Buses are coming to Brighton and Hove.

The city is set to be only the second location in the country to have buses with the technology to announce upcoming stops on a speaker system for the benefit of blind or visually impaired passengers.

Brighton and Hove Bus Company has paid £3.8 million for 21 buses with the technology and will be the first company in the country outside of London to offer the service.

As well as benefitting users who are blind or visually impaired, the service will help visitors unfamiliar with the city to find their stop and to familiarise themselves with some of the city’s attractions.

The new technology will be used on buses running on the number six route from Downs Park and Portslade to Brighton railway station and route seven buses that run from George Street, Hove via the Seven Dials, Brighton Station, Clock Tower, the Royal Sussex County Hospital and Sussex Eye Hospital to the Marina.

The buses have been put in service from last week and all 21 are expected to be in use by this week.

Brighton and Hove Bus Company managing director Roger French said they will now be specifying this technology as standard on all future new buses and are looking into the prospect of retro-fitting the system on existing vehicles.
