ON SATURDAY, March 5, at about 8.30am, I went to the Outpatients department of the Royal Sussex County Hospital because I was having difficulty with swallowing.
Within a couple of hours, I had been examined, had a scan and a scope, an endoscopy, an X-ray and a blood test.
By noon, I was on a ward with a drip. The following Monday, I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and, as a result, on Thursday I went to theatre to have a stent put into my oesophagus.
The treatment I received from the nursing and medical staff was exemplary. From my bed I could see that keeping the hospital clean and sanitary was a constant process.
The care assistants were so kind it brings tears to my eyes to remember them. I went twice to the chapel for communion, and was deeply impressed by the hospital chaplain.
And all this for free – not a single penny to pay.
This hospital must be proud of its record and, in turn, the people of Brighton should be proud of the hospital.
I, for one, am deeply grateful.
