A pensioner who needs daily home help visits to get washed, dressed and fed has had her funding for the assistance axed.

Betty Parker, 93, who lives alone, is partially deaf, suffers from arthritis and can only manage to walk a few yards with the help of a walking frame.

However West Sussex County Council has downgraded her needs from moderate to low and has stopped paying for the two hours of care a day she relies on.

Mrs Parker, who has a bedsit in Horsham, is now paying £450 out of her £800 monthly income to cover the cost of an hour's help a day.

Her plight was highlighted by the Don't Cut Us Out campaign group, which is fighting planned cuts to benefits and care support.

A council spokeswoman denied Mrs Parker's case was linked with the recent decision to change eligibility criteria for financial assistance and said agreement had been reached following discussions with Mrs Parker and her family.
