Sussex Police have made a last-ditch effort to get organisers of a major Brighton protest to contact them.

Protesters have used social networks such as Facebook and Twitter for anti-war, anti-capitalist and anti-cuts protesters to drum up support for Saturday's march.

Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett has made a direct video appeal through YouTube.

He said: "No one has come forward to speak to us about the protest which makes the policing operation difficult and increases the risk of disruption to members of the community, businesses and shop owners and visitors who just want to make the most of the recent warm weather and bank holiday weekend.

"We want to facilitate the right of all those involved to protest peacefully along with with the rights of those trying to go about their lawful business.

"This is the second protest over the two bank holiday weekends. We welcome people coming to the city to express their views but we are urging those involved to contact us about their intentions.

"Our officers are advising residents, businesses and those planning a shopping day in Brighton that certain areas may experience some temporary disruption during the protest. Officers will continue to liaise with community before and during the protest and we will be providing live update on Twitter and the Sussex Police website."
