Hundreds of people attended a celebration for a paperboy who died after he was struck by a car.

Declan Hubert, 14, was doing his rounds on Hangleton Road earlier this month when he stepped out in front of an oncoming car.

He was left in a coma at Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre in Haywards Heath for two days before the decision was made that he would not recover from his brain injuries.

His family and friends hosted a huge celebration of his life at St Helen’s Green, Hangleton, on Saturday.

It was across the road from the Safegate newsagent where Declan worked.

His parents Caroline and Jeremy, who were determined that the event would celebrate their son’s life, both gave readings.

Mrs Hubbert said: “We watched him blossom in unexpected ways over the last year.

“He received a distinction on guitar and we were so proud of this. His playing will be greatly missed.

“Dec was sociable, polite and genuinely interested in other people.”
