A three-car pile-up left seven people in hospital with two in a critical condition.
The crash, on the B2178 near Funtington outside Chichester at about 10.20pm last night, was described by a doctor at the scene as one of the worst he had ever seen.
Five men and two women, all thought to be in their twenties and thirties, are still in hospital this morning.
The crash, which involved a Subaru Impreza, an Audi and another vehicle, closed the road overnight.
Dr Neil Iosson, from the South East Coast Immediate Care Scheme, said: "This was one of the worst crashes I have attended in some time. Several people were extremely seriously injured in this collision and it is thanks to the immense teamwork by all the emergency services that we were able to get them all treated and transported to hospital rapidly."
