Is this the biggest dog in Sussex?

The owners of Sausage the Great Dane believe their pet should be given the title.

The colossal canine weighs in at 14 stone and needs to be walked three times a day.

His owners Danny Davies, 25, and 22-year-old Steffi Smith say they are regularly stopped by stunned passers-by.

Danny said: "He eats as much as a fully-grown man and weighs more than I do.

"He's very well exercised. We probably walk him about five miles at the weekend."

Not content with looking after Sausage, the couple also have four other dogs and keep them in a special room in their home.

Steffi is a dog carer and has walked other Great Danes, but she says that Sausage is the biggest dog she has ever seen.

She said: "For a Great Dane, he is particularly big and particularly strong. It's the biggest dog I've ever had, or ever seen.”

Great Danes have an average life expectancy of between eight and ten years, and Sausage is three, but Danny doesn't think he'll grow any more.

He added: "He's fully mature, we think he's as big as he's going to get.

"People do say 'he looks like a horse' and this sort of thing but, if a child tried to ride him, it would do his back in.

"We do get a lot of people coming up to us. It seems he's become a bit of a local celebrity – people ask his name and somehow remember him, even if we don't remember them."

Asked whether he thought Sausage might be Sussex's biggest dog, Danny added: "I've seen other dogs that come close, but not bigger".
