Passengers who wait for the 12 or 37 at the bus stop outside Sainsbury in North Street Brighton can finally catch their bus in the morning without having to worry about the driver not seeing them since Sainsbury regional Manager Ronan Phelan promised an immediate stop to all deliveries being made from the bus stop to the store.

For the past 6 months the bus stop has been blocked for up to an hour by the large vehicles parked there from 6.30-8am which meant that many passengers couldnt see the bus approaching or the driver see them. Buses were also made to overshoot the bus stop or park so as to block the road.

The bus users decided that they would reclaim the bus stop, supported by Cllr Jason Kitcat, they started a campaign of recording all the occasions the lorries parked blocking the bus stop or restrictng the already narrow road.

They asked the store why the loading bay at the rear of the store was not being used and were given excuses ranging from lost keys, lifts not working, to the fire brigade had banned them from using the side road. In an email they even admitted parking "illegally and dangerously" on the bus stop but it "didnt cause any inconvenience. "

Finally when presented by the evidence of over 70 photographs, and a store visit, Sainsbury regional managers admitted there was an issue and apologised for the delay in any action. They were also shown evidence that deliveries were made outside permitted hours of 7.30am to 9pm monday to saturday and none on sundays. which Mr Phelan stated he would make all his drivers and suppliers aware of.

One bus stop user, Sarah, said she was "pleased they could use the stop again as it was intended and the wheelchair users could return to their nearest stop. It has taken 6 months of emails and phone calls to get them to do what they should have done in the first place"

The bus stop also has prohibitive signs stating "No stopping except buses" and "no loading at any time".
