Dozens of people called police after a fresh appeal for help catching a rapist who struck in Brighton.

Callers to BBC’s Crimewatch programme on Tuesday gave two possible names after a harrowing reconstruction of the crime in Dyke Road Park, Brighton, in February.

Police have the attacker’s DNA but have not found a match on their national database.

Detectives say they can use that evidence to quickly eliminate any suspects wrongly named from their inquiry.

They also issued CCTV footage of the a man filmed walking behind the teenager before the attack.

Tuesday’s reconstruction showed the 17-year-old A-level student walking home from a night out in the city.

She realised as she walked along Dyke Road that a man was behind her, and crossed the road as a precaution.

She was grabbed from behind near the Booth Museum of Natural History, dragged into the park and raped.

Detective Chief Inspector Trevor Bowles praised her for her bravery in asking for the attacker’s name. He said he was called David and also said the word “cliché, cliché” twice.

Callers to the programme said the word could be similar to an Eastern European language’s phrase for “shut up”, or “be quiet”.

DCI Bowles said: “It was a brazen attack on a busy road, a quite awful and terrifying ordeal.”
