For years it has been one of the most cramped cities in the country.

But The Argus can reveal experts employed by Brighton and Hove City Council have identified 275 sites suitable for development in the next 15 years.

Youth centres, petrol stations, post offices, industrial estates all are considered as areas the local authority would like to turn into homes in the future.

This is in addition to prime major redevelopment sites such as Brighton Marina and the King Alfred leisure centre in Hove.

The report has been produced as the council's new Green administration reinforced its commitment to build at least 1,000 new affordable homes in the next four years as it looks to tackle a housing waiting list of 11,500 people.

But opposition councillors raised questions about where services, such as doctors and primary schools, would be provided for the new developments.

The study by planning experts GVA Grimley identifies a potential capacity for up to 7,425 dwellings in the city by 2025, an average of 495 new homes a year.

Among those to be looked at first are schemes for Brighton General Hospital, Anston House in Preston Road, Brighton, and the Gala Bingo site in Portland Road, Hove.
