Thousands of people flocked to an international festival of sport to try their hand at activities ranging from dance and football to cycling and martial arts.

Visitors had the chance to check out 15 zones at the Take Part launch event in Preston Park, Brighton, on Saturday.

As well as picking up football tips at The Albion Zone, families could also learn more about their health at the Bupa Health and Wellbeing Zone and how to cook up nutritious meals at the Co-operative Membership Eat Well Zone.

There was also the opportunity to join in dance workshops and watch the world famous Team Extreme BMX and skateboarding display team.

Ryan Edwards, sports development manager at Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “Take Part is all about celebrating everything that people can do to lead an active lifestyle in Brighton and Hove.

“So whether that is dance, street surfing, skateboarding, football or hockey, Take Part is about showcasing how you can go about taking part in those sports in Brighton and Hove all year round.”

100 different groups provided more than 50 sports and activities throughout the day.

Dancers from Pop Dance UK were one of the groups which took to the stage to show off their moves.

Owner Kerry Kent said: “We have been taking part in Take Part since its inception.

“I think it's a brilliant way of showing people in Brighton what there is out there for kids to do instead of just sitting indoors.

“There are different activities for girls and boys and it's an amazing day to showcase everyone's talents.”

Pop Dance UK will be performing at Hove Town Hall on July 9 and is offering 25% off tickets to Argus readers. Call 01273 887474.

Between 9,000 and 10,000 people attended the Take Part launch.

Among them was Marcia Lee, 39, of Beatty Avenue, Brighton, and her five-year-old son Mason.

She said: “We came last year and it's really good fun and all free.

“It's really nice for children to be able to get out and try new things.”

Take Part takes place across the city until July 10.

Speaking after the event Mr Edwards said: “It was a great day, the park was really busy and everywhere you looked people were getting involved in activities.

“This was the launch event and for the next two weeks activities will take place across the city.”
