More than 100 people gathered to remember greengrocer Tony Magdi.
An olive tree was unveiled outside Mr Magdi’s shop in Portland Road, Hove.
A plaque, sent over by his best friends George Jeha and Liz Collis from Canada, was also unveiled.
It included an inscription of Mr Magdi’s favourite quote: “When you have enough you can afford to share.”
Mr Magdi, 52, died last November after being attacked in a road rage incident.
At Saturday’s event children dressed as fruit and vegetables for a fancy dress competition.

“Tony’s motto should be a motto for others.
“It was a bittersweet day. The olive tree and plaque looks astonishing.
“Everybody had a story to tell.
“I walked past and two roses had been laid in memory of a wonderful man.”
Mr Magdi’s attacker, Paul Lambeth, 36, of Stafford Road, Brighton, admitted manslaughter and was jailed for 18 months earlier this month.
