Tributes have been paid to a well-known campaigner who died in a horror crash.

Alf Filer died at the scene of the crash at Hangleton, Hove.

He was standing by his stationary car when another vehicle crashed into it about 10.20pm on Thursday.

His son Leon paid tribute, saying: “He was a great dad.”

Mr Filer, of Elm Grove, Worthing, who was in his fifties, was described as a “committed socialist and anti-fascist”.

Hove trade unionist Andy Richards said: “Alf was meant to be semi-retiring to the south coast but, characteristically, that was never going to happen.

“He campaigned locally and nationally against cuts.

“Alf was a member of Socialist Resistance, and he played an incredible part in revitalising us locally.

“Alf was serious about his politics - but he was also a joker.

“A truly brilliant, dedicated and lovable man.”

A 35-year-old Brighton man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed until a later date.
