The body of a man found in the sea at Brighton on Saturday has now been identified as John Donovan.

Mr Donovan, 74, lived in Hampshire Court, Upper St James Street, Kemp Town.

He was pulled from the sea at 5.30pm after a woman on the beach reported spotted him floating in the water.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Police were called to Brighton beach to reports of the man's body floating in the sea near to Portland Place after he had been seen to enter the sea from a nearby groyne for reasons not yet established.

“Members of the public brought the body to the shore at around 5.30pm where paramedics tried to resuscitate the man but sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“An inquest will be held in due course.”

The body of another man which was recovered from the sea at around 3.25pm on Saturday close to Brighton Marina has yet to be indentified.

The spokesman continued: “Members of the public informed the emergency services when the body was spotted about 150m east of Brighton Marina. The local coastguard assisted in bringing the body to the shore.

The body is that of a white man and appears to have been in the water for a period of time.

Police are not treating either death as suspicious. There is no reason to believe the bodies are in any way connected
