Blazing sunshine, tornados, torrential rain and drought –the people of Sussex have had a year’s worth of weather in just a month.

Umbrellas, sun cream and winter coats have all been called for this June as the weather has swayed from the sublime to the sometimes ridiculous.

With temperatures yesterday soaring to 25C, many took advantage of the sea breeze and spent the day relaxing by the coast.

A warm spring meant June began with water companies reassuring concerned members of the public amid fears of a hosepipe ban. However, the blue skies were replaced with showers throughout the month while a tornado was spotted off the Sussex coast on June 10.

The recent spell of warm weather forced animal charities to issue a reminder to pet owners.

Chris Laurence, veterinary director of Dogs Trust said: “While enjoying fun in the sun please remember that dogs can suffer from the same problems that humans do including overexposure to the sun, overheating, dehydration and even sunburn.”

He urged owners to never leave animals in cars and walk dogs in the cooler times of the day.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue service also had a busy night attending a number of calls in the last two days.

The hot weather was believed to be the cause of a bale of straw igniting in Kilnwood Field in Ifield, near Crawley about 9.20pm on Sunday.

The hot weather is also having an affect on people’s moods with hotel operator Travelodge claiming many will have their grumpiest week of the year.

A snap survey claimed 88% of people will loose on average two and half hours sleep due to hot humid nights meaning people were moody and irritable during the day.
