Sussex County Cricket Ground bosses hope to hold more concerts at the venue despite a number of complaints after the Elton John gig.

About 18,000 people packed into the ground in Eaton Road, Hove, to hear the singer belt out hits including Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Tiny Dancer on Sunday.

It was the first concert since the ground’s £7 million refurbishment.

Bosses now say they hope to be able to make it an annual event, with a weekend including one or two concerts.

Chief executive Dave Brooks said: “We would like to do a weekend per year of maybe one or two concerts, while being mindful of local residents of course.”

However some fans said they were frustrated at the Elton John gig after queuing for more than an hour for the bars and toilets.

One Brighton fan said: “There was an hour’s queue for a drink and then there was no water available and an hour queue for the toilet.

“I paid £114 in total for a ticket.”

Mr Brooks admitted there had been some problems, including a minor breakdown at one set of toilets.

He said: “Every day we are open we learn something we can put into process the next time we open.

“We are all constantly learning about better way to do things.

“When 18,000 people turn up at 5pm, when the gates opened at 3pm, they all want to use the facilities at the same time.

“The main issue was alcohol, as there was free water available in a couple of places around the ground and soft drinks were available at all of the food concessions, which did not have such long queues.

“So the queues built up around the alcohol.

“But we had the maximum number of staff and the maximum number of bars we could fit in as we have got make to sure there is space to get people in and out safely in an emergency.

“While it is regrettable that a number of people had to queue for a while, most people would have still been able to see and enjoy the concert.”

He added that they had received permission from the promoters to keep some of the bars open later which were supposed to have closed at 6pm.

He said: “We would apologise to those people and are more than happy to talk to anyone about their issues and concerns but we are proud of the event we put on and were delighted to give the opportunity to the people of Brighton and Hove to enjoy it.”
