AMONGST my favourite buildings in Hove are the grand houses of Brunswick Square.

Indeed, my interest in local history was sparked in a student flat on the east side of that Regency composition.

Despite my love of the buildings of that glorious period, the Regencyinspired proposals for Hove seafront’s prominent Sackville Hotel site fill me with dread (The Argus, June 15).

Local residents with whom I have spoken feel this low-rise scheme is better than past high-rise proposals, and they may well be right.

However, concluding that such answers indicate genuine support is lazy at best.

I recall that Karis tried a similar tactic during their King Alfred campaign.

People were asked if they wanted better sporting facilities on the site.

Everybody said yes, of course, and this was held up as evidence of overwhelming support.

In the case of the Sackville Hotel, my personal preference would certainly be for a terrace of houses of the height proposed.

I would not wish to precisely define the style but I would expect any development on such a prominent location to offer the best of what we’re building today – rather than a poor copy of what was built 190 years ago.
