A man wielding a gun failed in an attempt to hold up a post office.

Police were called to the shop in Hunston, near Chichester, yesterday following reports of a man trying to rob staff using a suspected firearm.

Just after 2pm a man entered the shop and threatened staff. No money was handed over and he left the post office empty handed.

Detective Sergeant Alan Pack, of West Sussex CID, said: “Officers were deployed across the area and within a short time a suspect was located and arrested. A silver handgun was also recovered from nearby and has been submitted for analysis.”

No one was injured during the incident.

Lee Hunt, 31, of Bognor Regis has been charged with attempted robbery, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of a bladed article.

He was remanded in police custody overnight and is due to appear before Chichester Magistrates' Court this morning.
