A cancer survivor is urging people to take the fundraising plunge for charity.

Father-of-two Richard Carter visited the beach near Brighton Marina to highlight how The Swim can be supported.

The relay team challenge will see celebrities including Ronan Keating and Sir Richard Branson tackle a 56-mile swim across the Irish Sea.

All proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK.

People can show their support by staging their own swimmingrelated activity or by sponsoring the celebrities to help raise £1 million.

Strong swimmers who have raised at least £100 by July 15 will be in with the chance to grab one of two public places in the relay challenge team.

Trials for a public place in The Swim will be held in Brighton on July 26 and 27.

Mr Carter, 46, from Portslade, is a lecturer at City College Brighton and Hove.

He was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2006 and underwent surgery and chemotherapy.

He said: “I feel so lucky to have survived cancer – it feels great to have reached my five years all clear.

“It’s thanks to research that I am still here today. Success stories like mine would not be possible without the work of Cancer Research UK, so I’m delighted to be able to lend my help.”
