LIVING in the most smashing city of the lot, I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that one of the many perks of living in Brighton and Hove is the generally liberal attitude of the population.

Combine that with our attractive beaches and fabulous attractions viewed by thousands of people all year round, and you get the utopia that is this city.

On a warm sunny day with no clouds and a light breeze, I like nothing better than going out for a nice little drive.

But with all of Brighton’s great assets comes a bit of a problem for me, for when the sun is beating its rays down, so too do others wish to take a nice drive down to the beach, enjoy the weather and get some fresh sea air. And good on them too.

But, all too frequently traffic is backed-up for miles, with jams where you would usually turn off on your alternative route home. Perhaps it’s a bit of a far-fetched concept, but why not charge non-residents, such as day trippers, maybe a pound or two to enjoy our city?

They seem to do it in London, even if it is a lot different.

It would put some much-needed cash in Brighton and Hove City Council’s pocket, and I’m sure it could help with something like pothole repairs when winter comes.

So how about a congestion charge for the summer months? Or even for a few weeks?
