A road was closed after a woman was spotted the wrong side of a bridge's barriers.

The A27 at Tangmere, near Chichester, was shut for about 30 minutes today at 5.30am following the incident.

Members of the public reported seeing a woman on the wrong side of the bridge’s barriers and called the emergency services.

One man said: “Police were called to the bridge where a woman was standing outside the barriers in a position to jump onto the eastbound carriageway.

“Police blocked the eastbound A27 and traffic detoured around the incident via the slip road causing very little disruption.

“Three police cars were on the scene and officers attempted to talk the woman to safety.”

A Sussex Police spokesman confirmed officers attended and the woman was made safe.

She was not arrested or detained.
