These young, healthy Staffies are just days away from being put down because no one will give them a home.

Button, Joey and Brian were picked up by animal rescuers after being left to wander the streets of Brighton.

Attempts by Brighton and Hove City Council to find them new homes have failed and now they will be put to sleep despite being just two years old and perfectly fit and healthy.

Staffordshire bull terriers, or Staffies, are often bought or bred to be used as trophy pets because of their image as violent animals.

But they require a lot of care, attention and exercise, which means they are regularly abandoned by people who decide they don’t have the time or money to support them.

Despite the RSPCA offering to castrate the dogs for free if new owners can be found for them, no one has come forward to take the pets home.

A spokesman for the council’s animal welfare team said: “We were hoping that the publicity in the new year would encourage people to think twice before taking on these trophy dogs, but once again our kennels are full. We are faced with the heartbreaking decision of whether to put three healthy young staffies to sleep.”

Stray Staffies hit the headlines in January after six were dumped in the city.

Six months later Joey, a Staffie cross, was found in Ditchling Road, Brian was found in Whitehawk and Button was found in Por tslade.

The spokesman said: “They have all been in kennels for several weeks and there are just days left to find them new homes. We don’t want to put these dogs to sleep but it’s not viable, financially, or for their wellbeing, to keep them in kennels any longer.”
