I WOULD like to say a few words of thanks. Citizens of Brighton and Hove – I salute you. Why?

Because the kindness and generosity of your donations given to me recently as a St Dunstan’s Charity street collector completely overwhelmed me.

I must admit I was rather apprehensive offering my services to St Dunstan’s, bearing in mind the difficult times we are experiencing, but thought “let’s give it a go”.

And how quickly my doubts were dispensed. I’d like to believe it was my quiet humming of “I’m leaning on the lamp post at the corner of the street” which attracted donations my way. Wishful thinking – I believe the grandeur and emotion created the previous day by the exhilarating parade of the Princess of Wales regiment inspired people to make their contributions.

Sincere thanks go out to all – from the toddler in his father’s arms to the senior nurse who shared her precious time with me – you encouraged me deeply and made a retired gentleman very happy.
