YOUR various articles about the Palace Pier overlook a curious point.

In at least two movies set in the past, there is an establishing shot which uses the end of the pier as it now appears rather than recreating the mysteriously lost theatre.

These are A Handful Of Dust and Under Suspicion. The latter, with Liam Neeson, was a fine, 1950s-set thriller that has vanished from sight.

Also unobtainable is the best Brighton movie of all: Jigsaw. This was made in the early 1960s by Val Guest, who also set noirish thrillers in English towns and cities at that time.

Another twist is that this was adapted from a novel by Hillary Waugh, set in New Jersey. It is occasionally shown at the Duke Of York’s Picturehouse, where it attacts full houses – and many a gasp of surprise, not least at the salty remark by... no, I shall not spoil it.

I AM so pleased The Argus always refers to our pier as the Palace Pier. It will always be that to me and many others I am sure.

This is a photo [below] of my dad, Len, who worked on the Palace Pier in his youth. He worked as a maintenance man and here he is attending to one of the amusement games.

I hope the new owners will consider calling it the Palace Pier once again.
