Police have arrested three people on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was run over in Brighton yesterday.

At around 3.30pm yesterday a 33-year-old Brighton man received serious head and chest injuries in The Causeway, Brighton, following a dispute between two groups of people who are thought to be known to each other.

The victim remains in a serious but stable condition at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Two women - a 26-year-old and a 29-year-old, who are both from Brighton - were arrested shortly after the incident on suspicion of attempted murder and remain in custody this morning.

A 55-year-old Brighton man, who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at the same time as the women, is receiving treatment at hospital for minor injuries.

Police are investigating how he received these injuries and he remains under scene guard at Royal Sussex County Hospital this morning.

Detectives investigating the incident believe the victim was assaulted and came into contact with a car at around 3.30pm.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick May, of Sussex Police's Major Crime Branch which is investigating this incident, said: "This appears to be a case in which a personal dispute between two groups of people has got out of hand.

"We believe these people are all known to each other and no other members of the public were involved at any point.

"We have three people in custody and at this stage we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

"Detectives from Sussex Police's Major Crime Branch are in the early stages of investigating this incident and we would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the incident take place in The Causeway yesterday afternoon.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who saw a green 4x4 vehicle being driven in The Causeway yesterday afternoon."

The Causeway was closed yesterday afternoon while forensic searches were carried out. The road has now reopened.
