Fundraisers have collected £1,200 to keep open a children’s group which is used by hundreds of people a week.

Last month, The Argus reported that Carden Tots, which is based at the Old Boat Corner Community Centre in Carden Hill, Brighton, was concerned about its survival after being turned down for a series of grants.

Local mothers and users stepped in to help raise funds to keep the group open while they wait for the results of grant applications. Hayley Morris, 24, whose daughter Mea, 3, attends the group, teamed up with her boss, Gayle Newman, who runs the Ladies Mile Pub to fundraise.

They and other group members are hosting a Mexican food night at the pub, and have also organised cake sales and a raffle.

Ms Morris said: “We are hoping to raise upwards of £1,500 which will keep the group running for at least another ten or 12 weeks.

“We would be heartbroken if it closed. “All of our kids love it. I still don’t think enough people are aware of how bad the situation is.

“It is great to raise money but what will they do when this money runs out.”

Dozens of local businesses have donated prizes to the raffle including Hassocks Golf Club, the Palace Pier and local restaurants.

Elizabeth Clift, the chairwoman of the group and the Old Boat Corner Community Centre Association, said: “Everyone has pulled together.

“I have been overwhelmed by the support of the community.

“Hayley and Gayle have done so much of the fundraising so I want to say a really big thank you to them.”

The raffle will be drawn at the Mexican food night on Wednesday.

Tickets can be bought from the bar of the pub in Mackie Avenue, Patcham.
