An Islamic school raided by anti-terror police could be forced to close.

The Jameah Islameah School at Mark Cross, near Crowborough, has been told by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) it must improve its standards.

Police were yesterday continuing to search the grounds of the former convent, which was raided on September 2 amid reports it had hosted training camps for radical Islamic groups.

Searches are expected to continue for weeks but no arrests have been made at the school.

The threat of closure is not related to the raid or any potential links to terrorist activity.

In June the nine-pupil independent school was told it was failing to adequately educate its students and had to provide a suitable action plan to show how it would improve. Ofsted inspectors will be sent to the school this term to check whether changes have been made. If they are not satisfied, the school will be closed.

The measures followed a damning Ofsted inspection in December. The school produced an action plan to address its failings but this was deemed not adequate by the DfES. It was asked to create a second plan, which was received on July 27.
