Police have been given more time to question men arrested in connection with a shooting in a cornershop.

Caesar Zarate was shot in the face as he worked in Margery Road Stores, Hove, at 10.30am on Monday.

Investigating officers interviewed witnesses at the scene and later carried out searches in several properties across the city.

Police said they had made "a number of arrests" and had been granted at least another 24 hours to question the detainees.

A spokeswoman for the police said: "The exact number of arrests cannot be revealed at this stage for operational reasons."

Mr Zarate, who lives in the Preston Park area of Brighton, was yesterday still recovering in hospital.

The injuries to his face and body are not thought to be life-threatening.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
