A two-year-old child has become the second suspected case of E. coli at a nursery.
The Hilltop Nursery in Brighton was closed last Friday after a three-year-old caught the infection and an 18-month-old child was also treated for a suspected case.
Now a third toddler who also attends the nursery in Elm Grove is being treated for a suspected case of the infection.
The three-year-old is being treated in hospital in London and is said to be improving.
Those suspected of having E. coli are being cared for at home.
The nursery, which caters for 40 pre-school children of NHS staff at Brighton General Hospital, is being deep cleaned in line with national guidelines on preventing the spread of infection.
The nursery will reopen when sufficient nursery staff test clear of any sign of the infection.
E. coli occurs in uncooked beef and unpasteurised milk and can be passed from person to person.
The incubation period is one to 14 days, with symptoms including nausea, abdominal pains and diarrhoea.
