A crimewatch television appeal to catch a man suspected of seriously sexually assaulting a teenage girl has thrown up a number of leads for police.

The 18-year-old victim was dancing alone in The Event nightclub, Brighton, when she was approached by a man who invited her outside for some fresh air after dancing close to her.

Once outside he persuaded her to go into the underground car park at the rear of the Odeon Cinema and the Brighton Centre.

He then seriously sexually assaulted her.

It was only when his phone rang that the attack stopped. He had a brief conversation on the phone then ran off in the direction of the taxi rank in West Street.

He left behind a River Island belt with a chrome buckle.

A renewed appeal for help in identifying the man following the assault in the early hours of May 7 was screened on Crimewatch on Tuesday.

CCTV footage shows the suspect leaving the nightclub and then on the corner by the car park. The next images show the suspect answering his phone in the car park before running off.

He is described as white, between 18 and 22 years old, 5ft 9in to 6ft 2in tall and of medium build, with short, spiked blonde or brown gelled hair.

He was wearing a long-sleeved white tailored shirt with light blue stripes, dark blue denim jeans, smart black slip-on shoes and he spoke with a local accent.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "We have had a number of calls and promising leads as a result of Crimewatch but we have not yet arrested a suspect and are still appealing for people who know anything to come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070 999 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
