Bricycles would like to warmly welcome Brighton and Hove City Council’s proposed move to lower speed limits in the city, and also to congratulate Councillor Ian Davey on taking this forward.
We have supported and promoted the “20’s plenty” campaign for many years.
Too much traffic going too fast is the most frequent reason given for not cycling.
20mph zones are effective at reducing collisions and injuries affecting all road-users.
Research has shown that, overall, average annual accident frequency can fall by about 60%, and the number of accidents involving injury to children can be reduced by up to two-thirds.
We recommend speed reduction as the first approach to enable walking and cycling.
In populated areas, the balance of power on the roads needs to shift towards those who use sustainable transport.
