Firefighters were called to a flat after reports the occupier was boiling petrol on the stove.
It turned out this was not the case but instead the man was storing a lot of cans of petrol.
A Preston Circus firefighter said his neighbour called the fire service after their flat started to stink of petrol.
Sussex Police were also called to the incident in Gladstone Place, Brighton, at 1.30am today.
