What is the Women’s Institute? Established in Canada in 1897 the first Women’s Institute in England started in West Sussex in 1915. Based on the values of truth, tolerance, justice and fellowship, the WI is non sectarian or party political.

The WI offers opportunities for all women to enjoy friendship, to learn, widen their horizons and influence local, national and international affairs. The WI’s own Denman College offers courses from crafts to computing, personal development, history and sport. Most WI’s meet monthly to see friends, do activities, learn skills and listen to speakers. They arrange outings and trips and get involved in local projects. WI activities are various and decided by the group and could include the following: walking, quiz nights ,knitting, cookery, floristry, horticulture, career business training, personal development, social events, theatre, book clubs, women’s health, discussion and debates, current affairs, golf, healthy living, crafts, IT.. Recent WI Campaigns have included: Save the Bee, Climate Change, Renewable Energy and End Violence against women.
