Recreation, not rubbish, is what Hangleton Bottom should be used for. It should not be turned into a site for sorting out rubbish (The Argus, October 5).

Labour city councillor Bob Carden, who represents North Portslade, is quite right; there is no need for a material recovery facility or waste transfer station to be located at this site.

Brighton and Hove City Council spent a lot of money on the depot in Hollingdean, so there should be no need for another one at Hangleton Bottom.

I am sure residents would rather see a football pitch and perhaps a children’s playground there rather than a waste centre.

A spokesman for the council has said work on potential waste sites would begin in 2013 and any future decisions would be taken after a consultation with local residents.

I am surprised that, at a time when we are encouraging children to take part in more sporting and general outdoor activities, we are now looking at another green site being turned into a site for sorting out rubbish instead.

With an ever-increasing number of younger people with young children near this area, there is a greater need for more recreational facilities.

I would have thought the council should be actively encouraging and promoting recycling rather than looking to build further waste facilities in the city.

I do not think this is giving out the right message.

We should all be recycling more and cutting down on general waste.
