MANY thanks to Derek Coles for his input to the discussion of an art gallery for Brighton (Letters, October 6).

I agree completely with his reference to the imposing Towner gallery in Eastbourne.

Not only is it an impressive piece of architecture but an excellent venue for visitors from this city and beyond.

I make regular visits to view the varied art on show and feel the atmosphere created is very suitable for viewing exhibitions. It is encouraging also to have the opportunity to enjoy the work of leading artists in the Towner’s well-planned gallery.

We are fortunate also to have regular exhibitions at the De La Warr Pavilion further down the coast in Bexhill. In addition, there is the prospect of a new gallery in Hastings (The Stade), while an excellent new gallery at Margate means the South East is rapidly challenging London.

So let’s support these bold initiatives and encourage more – a new gallery for Brighton and Hove should be on the drawing board now, before architects get carried away with more roof-tops gardens.
